Atlas Contractors, Inc. Background
Atlas Contractors, Inc is a General Engineering Construction Company and has been contracting under its current name since September of 1982. Jim Mahoney, founded Atlas in Long Beach California in 1946 starting with just a skip loader. Jim liked to keep the company small and personal. Later, Jim's son Jay moved to Truckee, CA and began JJ Mahoney and Son. Jay began by sealing driveways in and around the Truckee - Tahoe area. Jim's company, Atlas Engineering and Construction, relocated to Truckee, CA in 1978. Jim and Jay combined the two companies in 1982, renaming the combination, Atlas Contractors, Inc. Atlas Contractors mostly built small driveways along with random paving jobs. Soon Jay's brother Clay, along with some of Jay's close friends joined Atlas making the company what it is today.

Atlas Contractors, Inc. now consists of two full time paving crews, seven grading crews (fine and mass grading), eight underground crews, and approximately 200 employees. We pride ourselves in doing things right the first time, efficiently, with customer service always in mind. As a result many of our customers and clients choose to work with Atlas on their future projects. Atlas is a non-union company but can run certified payroll, and bids on prevailing wage projects frequently. We look forward to hearing from you.
Unfortunately Jim Mahoney passed away in 1999. Jay Mahoney, who has been in the construction industry for more than 41 years, is President of the corporation. He also is the license qualifier in California. Clay Mahoney, Jim's son, who has been in the construction industry for more than 37 years, is Vice President, paving general manager, and the license qualifier in Nevada. Maureen Mahoney, Jim's Daughter is the Secretary of the corporation and is in charge of licenses and insurance. Barbara Mahoney, Jay's wife, is Treasurer and is semi-retired. Jay's son, Jake Mahoney has been with the company for 15 years, is a Vice President, and holds a General Engineering license in NV and CA. Along with the Mahoney Family, several other family friends are managing, controlling, accounting, estimating, and building a strong future for Atlas. Atlas Contractors is proud of its employees, and thrives on a family atmosphere. Several people have been with Atlas for more than 20 years.
PRINCIPAL BIOS



Jay Mahoney – Owner / President-

Having been born into the family business, Jay has 48+ years of construction experience in all aspects of excavating, concrete work, underground utilities, grading, asphalt paving and asphalt manufacturing. In addition to his field experience; for the past 27 years, Jay has overseen every aspect of operating and growing Atlas Contractors, Inc. into the successful and reputable business it is today. Jay is the license qualifier for the State of Nevada.

Clay Mahoney – Owner / Vice President -

Also born into the family business, Clay possesses 37+ years experience in all aspects of field work including dirt work, grading and concrete work. Clay learned about asphalt paving in the early 1970’s which allowed in time, the company to expand its services. As the business grew, Clay held positions of Paving Foreman and eventually Paving Superintendent. His additional responsibilities included bidding projects and becoming familiar with hot mix manufacturing operations, including complete knowledge of various asphalt mix specifications and characteristics. Clay is the license qualifier for the State of California.

Jake Mahoney – Vice President -

Also born into the family business, Jake holds a General Engineering Contractors license in Nevada and California. Jake has spent the last 18+ years working in each of Atlas’ divisions to gain the practical knowledge necessary to one day run the company. Jake spent four years on different grading crews as a grade setter, two years on paving crews, two years on underground crews as a pipe-layer, one year at an asphalt plant as a ground man/back up operator, one year as a materials tester, three years as an estimator, three years as general manager of asphalt production, and two years as Jay Mahoney’s assistant. Currently he is being trained to take over management of all operations of the company.

Maureen Mahoney – Owner / Secretary -

As sister to Jay and Clay, Maureen started out in various administrative and accounting positions while going to college. Once Atlas was incorporated in 1982, Maureen became part owner, and Secretary of the Corporation. In addition to her corporate secretary responsibilities, she also oversees the Safety Division, keeping the company updated and in compliance with all federal, state and local safety regulations as well as enforcement of the Atlas Workforce Safety Program.

Barbara, Jay’s wife, serves as Treasurer and is semi-retired from the company.

CORPORATE MANAGEMENT BIOS

Bro Shontz – Head Estimator -

Bro has been employed with Atlas Contractors since 1980. He began his Atlas career as a heavy equipment operator, eventually running the Grading Division. For the last 18 years his position at Atlas has been Head Estimator overseeing the department’s six Estimators/Project Managers. His duties include estimating, contract negotiations and quality assurance. His knowledge base is broad in all aspects of land development and construction including earthwork, grading, underground utilities and asphalt paving.

Ed Seeber – Controller -

Ed has been employed with Atlas Contractors since 1988 and serves as the company’s Controller. In addition to accounting, Ed’s background also includes 21+ years of field construction and management.

Jay Steverman – Operations / Dispatch Manager-

Jay has been with Atlas since 1978. His experience within the company includes truck driver, heavy equipment operator and mechanic. He has held his current position since 1994.

Ken Priest – Safety / Training Manager-

Ken has been with Atlas Contractors since 1993. He held positions in various divisions of Atlas including grading, underground, truck driving, mechanic and purchasing agent prior to his current position as Safety & Training Manager he has held since 1997. His job entails basic safety training, including but not limited to supervisory training, certified traffic control & safety, conducting weekly onsite tailgate meetings, bi-weekly jobsite inspections, OSHA/MSHA compliance, HAZMAT training, enforcement and compliance of the Atlas Workforce Safety Program. His job encompasses all safety and training procedures companywide. Ken is also a retired Fire Captain from the Squaw Valley Fire Department, serving 25 years.

Mike Kuhnmuench – General Superintendent, Underground -

Mike has been employed with Atlas Contractors since 1985. In that time has held positions of pipe layer, pipe crew foreman, grade checker, utility foreman. He has served in his current position for the last 13 years, overseeing the Underground Division, managing up to nine underground crews. Mike’s current certifications include Polyethylene Gas Pipe, Competent Person (OSHA Trench Safety), Confined Space Training, NV Energy Gas & Electric Safety Training, Underground Utilities Estimating (CEIA). Mike holds a Bachelors Degree in Finance from the University of Santa Clara. CA.
